Truman Capote. The Complete Stories.

T
engo on my bedside two copies of the Complete Stories of Truman Capote . One is the original English version, published by Penguin, an international edition is not sold in the U.S., but that is identical to that translated into English for Anagram, the other version of the book. When you are in this cursiosa situation can be compared not only translations but also the editing and the cover. I say the cover because both contain photographs of the author, and being both very different photographs, called attention to the concept of using a photograph as an advertisement of a book of short stories.

is understandable for several reasons, but the
main public notice of Capote, who became what is known in his country as a celebrity , and here be called years later a famous . This has made has been photographed by the most important contemporary photographers. The image of the English edition is Henri Cartier-Bresson , co-founder of the agency Magnum and one of the most iconic photographers of the twentieth century. Specialist in making street, and creator of the concept of turning point, Cartier-Bresson a portrait of a young Capote, the author of several stories with resonance, but not yet widely recognized.

The image is intriguing, appears to have been in a botanical garden or greenhouse, with a very great taro leaves in the background. Sitting on a bench, cast iron, Capote seems surprised, it seems that just turning, with his left hand in an accidental position. However, his left arm hidden away, and hiding something. Possibly a photographer's appeal, turning it quickly to avoid the forced pose. An exquisite overhead light darkens his face, giving it a gloomy and dark, her dress is very simple, a simple white shirt, somewhat surprising for someone who watched both his clothes contrasts with the thick darkness of the background. His unkempt hair is favorable, and we see a handsome young man with a promising future in the literature, but with a little unsettling, like a savage out of the shadows of the leaves to rob him, or like a carnivorous plant was about to devour . This splendid portrait has been used as cover in many his books and collections, and having taken in 1947, Capote was not yet the writer hailed by international critics as the author of Other Voices, Other .

The photograph of the English edition is completely different in intent and projection. Data from 1949, when Capote and moves in the post-war literary environment like a fish in water. Her work has taken flight, and this picture proves it. It was taken by Cecil Beaton , the photographer of the stars, in Tangiers, a paradise for the generation beatnik (or Sputnik), and meeting bohemian Anglophone literary originality.

The photograph shows a jubilant Capote, thug and spoiled. With legs, arms and open mouth, after jumping difficult to assess, since the image does not show soil or support where he could have done, in a gesture of madness. A shirt knotted at the waist, white pants, a shoe that I feel are of straw ... Capote is dressed in modern writer. The fund, a whitewashed wall, contains a mysterious doors (in the original photography are up to four), possibly related to the function of a device designed for firing clay, ventilation of a silo or something of the style. The image, despite the release vitality and joy, is also melancholy. Capote's shadow in the back wall produces a desperate figure, one hand stretched out for help, perhaps prediction of his death flooded drugs and alcohol. Capote enjoys life, but it comes to an end therefore inevitable.

seems impossible that the two pictures displayed on the same person, and are separated only by two years. Her stories also are extremely different and contradictory. Their tales of youth, where one notices the effort to create interesting and intriguing stories, mixed with some southern describing his childhood in Alabama , that mythical South which have carved many masterpieces of American literature. Others reflect the world New York where he wanted to live, surrounded by parties, fashion, flattery and stars. And yet his most effective stories are those with which recalls his childhood, his own life, in stories of Thanksgiving and Christmas (typical American journals), but undoubtedly the we show not only the real Capote, but the most primitive, sincere and complete.

Unfortunately, the English version, completed by more than half a dozen translators, we lose the word choice and select from their first stories, the simplicity of his stories Yorkers (where we see outlines of Breakfast Diamond is ) and the linguistic richness and even dining in the south. I imagine that with a translation unit, more carefully, the accounts would earn a lot, but not a bad approach to some stories varied in subject and quality, including three or four jewels American fiction of the twentieth century.
