Dress Length Below The Knee

know how to lose. David Trueba

D avid Trueba was born with star. Before his 40 years as an actor, film director and screenwriter of prestige, novelist and journalist widely recognized. The apparent ease and simplicity enntre moving the worlds film, literary and journalistic makes a special person, a representative of the XXI century cultural activity, a figure that seems overwhelming to do good all-encompassing. One can only wonder if his family has something to do with it, if the doors that appear closed to most easily have been open calls or friendships. It

also think if you can detach enough from hectic life and such a connection with reality to write a novel substance. I also find it difficult to abstract from what I know Trueba's life to read the novel in an objective and unbiased. Could now openly says that is a solid work clothing and bills. And may assume that there is a but.

A handful of characters, with nothing exceptional to have been elected by the author, form the framework of a story that is actually three separate major stories. Sylvia, a teenage girl a little misfit who lives with his divorced father, Lorenzo. Leandro's father Lorenzo, who has a torrid sexual episode with a prostitute who takes him to ruin. And Leanne, a failed business and labor who commits a crime. Behind them, several characters who bring them love, friendship, passion, fortune or misfortune, were already looking for them or not. All the stories end in separation making the novel a sad piece of contemporary society.

who these people are relatives does not seem nothing more than a coincidence, because these stories barely touch or are related, so are actually three separate novels, with very few contact points. This leads to a lack of strength of argument, even though the theme of failure and loneliness appellants serve as connecting thread between the stories.

also note in the novel in a hurry to provide data about the characters in the first chapters. In this I remember a film script, which puts at the characters with a summary of his life. The third person chosen for the ubiquitous narrative gives a hardness that is perhaps the most striking feature of the book. That voice can describe ubiquitous actions that cost them the support to the characters if any made, even to themselves. Unfortunately, that makes some distance from the characters, and watching them like a movie, not as a novel, where appropriate with a narrative might get in the mind of Sylvia and Lawrence. There are also some minor characters who behave strangely, unexplained, since the author does not elaborate on his reasons and it just gives clues, in contrast to the sometimes very detailed description of the actions and thoughts of the protagonists . Perhaps there are too many side, which again reminds me of a movie.

Not all that I have found a novel unworthy or without merit, and that the overall result is satisfactory. In a curious argument interesting combination of universal themes and issues specific to English society, that constitutes a reflective piece that gives us much to think. It is not easy or pleasant story, and although there are some topics too obvious (the divorced mother and Argentine soccer, among others) can appear as paradigms or symbols, closer to the metaphor of reality. The loose ends left by the novel are, to some extent, pending the characters and ourselves. Like life.
