Atondo's crime: last moments of Toribio Eguía (3) Carnaval de Lanz

Following the decision of 12 January 1885 death penalty club, counsel Mr. Mena bringing actions was referring to the special circumstances of his client. But all in vain.

Telegram, although it was supported by other Civil Governor, the Bishop, and Vice President of the Provincial Council, before 11 pm was answered with Mr Cánovas in that stated that "with the greatest feeling was not able to advise His Majesty the King for clemency request."

What you will read below was published on 16.10.1985 in the Journal of Pamplona "Lau-buru. The reporter, shocked by the scenes, much to his chagrin, he had to attend, makes a unique story of the last moments of Toribio. It is worth continuing the story of this anonymous chronicler uninterrupted. Simply I have placed some notes so that once read, you can complete the reading with some data from Eco de Navarra, or my own observations. I only corrected some obvious mistakes, retaining the style and the writing of the time.

[confess that when you start writing, we have never experienced an emotion similar to that which now overwhelms our spirits. Shakes our hand and the pen does not know to draw the statement of the facts and circumstances that we intend to narrate, to fulfill the duty we owe to our readers.

day before yesterday at dusk, time, news reached them that we gave in the previous issue, Toribio Eguía was, as before, calm and resigned.

At four rose. Had remained in jail overnight, and zealous priests D. Pedro Velasco and D. Hugalde Zechariah. This immediately celebrated mass.

The prisoner listened with great devotion the continuously urged by Mr. Velasco who accompanied him. When the time of Completion Eguía the celebrant proceeded to a brief but heartfelt exhortation and administered the Holy Communion, which Toribio received with exemplary zeal and remaining after the thanksgiving mass accompanied and advised by D. Pedro Velasco.

At seven and 40 minutes Eguía asked for something to eat, say a veal chop, but not having time to prepare and serve material, pigeon was served, ate some bread with a little and took a sip mellow wine.

He was somewhat concerned, but calmly replied to the comments of the priests.

Hopa Hooded

A quarter to eight entered the executioner to put the hopa. At that time he said to his confessor Eguía:

-In carrying out its duty, the executor of justice is going to wear the garment of criminals sentenced to death, but I am going to put on your chest logo repentant sinner.

Then came the time that the defendant left the chapel to be led to death.

The expectation was deep, when Eguía sat in the car, surrounded by priests D. Pedro Ilundain, D. Peter Belasco, Francisco Gonzalez, D. Hugalde Zacarias, Miguel Bisio and D. Angel Elduayen.

Broke up a squad of cavalry, were the brothers of Peace and Charity robes and lights, then the car in which the defendant was, as we have said, and then an escort of cavalry.

While the executioner held the accused with ropes and straps and I put the ring, Mr. Hugalde led to poor Toribio phrases full of love that he listened to his last moment.

One after the soul of Toribio Eguía appeared in court of Divine Justice.

D. At this moment Pedro Velasco prayed a prayer for and then D. Pedro Ilundáin briefly addressed the multitude, saying that Toribio Eguía died penitent and resigned, and counseling were to hear the Mass for his soul was to be held in the parish of San Lorenzo.
